During the memorial service of the elite marathoner, Tšepang Mathibelle, his family disclosed that he died due to shortage of blood in his body.
According to his twin brother Tšepo Mathibelle, Tšepang died on the 18th January two days after he was admitted at Teyateyaneng Hospital. He had been transferred from Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital earlier.
Fellow team mates and athletics administrators attended the memorial service that was held by Lesotho Athletics Federation (LAF) at Setsoto Stadium.
The LAF Spokesperson Mr. Sejanamane Maphathe, who was also the leader of the athletics club attended by the deceased, praised the commitment of Mathibelle.
Tšepang’s Coach Mr. Mokete Chaplin Mpomane said he coached both Tšepo and Tšepang at very early age. He said he was very shocked when he heard of the passing of Tšepang. “I coached these twins when they were very young and it was so difficult at that time,” he said.
“I went as far as to convince their teachers and their principal about the boys talent. When I was recruiting them, I had realised that the deceased was not taking athletics serious, but his twin brother was very committed.” he said.
“I realised that since these two were inseparable, i had to bring Tšepang along so that Ts’epo can work hard,” Mpomane said. ” After Tšepo completed a cross-country in Zambia, Tšepang came to me and told me that he wanted to run and said Ts’epo is not better than him and I was very happy to hear that.” he said.
The deceased teammate, Ramolefi Motsieloa lamented the passing of Tšepang as a shock to him and the whole club. He said they have had very good times while he was alive.
“I remember when he dodged training and went fishing at Maqalika dam. We tried with his brother Tšepo to convince him that he must take his trainings serious, but we failed until our coach Chaplin Mpomane talked to him.” Motsieloa said.
Speaking on behalf of coaches, the Olympic silver medalist Mr. Thabiso Moqhali said coaches should be doctors of athletes, he said coaches know what athletes need and do not need.
Moqhali warned athletes to be very careful about so called agent coaches outside the country because they just looking for money while destroying our athletes. “A trusted coach knows what his athletes want and he is there to assist them.” he said.
Tšepang is not the first athlete to die with shortage of blood in his blood, these agent coaches only care for money not the lives of these athletes, so be vigilant.” he said.
Tšepang entered several races where he performed superbly. In his career he won Knysna Forest Marathon, Mandela Marathon and Maritzburg marathon between 2014 to 2016.
