Likuena eager to resume AFCON preparation
LEFA WANTS LIKUENA TO RESUME TRAINING
Maseru, Sept 19 – Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) is determined to see the senior soccer squad Likuena starts training soon as part of preparations for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) delegation led by Secretary General Mr. Mokhosi Mohapi had a meeting with with the National COVID-19 Secretariat (NACOSEC) on Friday.
LeFA Communication Officer Mr. Mikia Kalati said it was in this meeting that the delegation presented the LeFA case to see the return of football in the country.
“The NACOSEC appreciated our presentation and have now moved it to be presented to the Ministerial subcommittee/task committee and that next week we will be invited to discuss the matter further with the NACOSEC Technical Committee with the view of having our case being given the green light or being gradually accepted,” he highlighted.
He said they were adamant that he national team Likuena starts training as of this Sunday.
The LeFA delegation presented its case before a team that consisted of the NACOSEC Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief of Staff, the Stakeholkder Relationships Manager and two other officers.
Likuena is expected to face Benin in the back to back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qaulifiers in November.
This match should have been played in March earlier this year, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was forced to suspend the fixture due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
Likuena is in group L which consists of Nigeria’s Super Eagles currently perched at the top of the group while Likuena sits on third place after Benin while Sierra Leone languishes at the basement of the four member nation.
Likuena opened the group encounter with an away 1-1 draw against Sierra Leone before being crushed 4-2 by the Super Eagles at Setsoto stadium.
Only group leaders from each group will proceed to the AFCON finals to be played in Cameroon next year, plus the host nation as well as best losers.
The group L consists of Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Benin and Lesotho.
