Maseru, Sept. 09 – – The Development Planning Minister Selibe Mochoboroane has strongly sent a signal for the ministry of gender, sport and recreation to ensure that sporting facilities benefit Basotho people in order to improve international performance.
During his address to the gender and sport ministry management after a visit to Mount-Moorosi and Thaba-li-‘Mele unused facilities, he keenly observed that that ministry was awarded M64 million from India in 2013 The money was for purchase of equipment for Mount Moorosi, Thabana-li-Mele and Thaba-Tseka vocational schools.
However, he added that at both Mount Moorosi and Thabana-li-‘Mele, the facilities have turned into white elephants as they have not been used for intended purposes. He demanded an explanation for such conduct while seeking to know as to when the investments would be utilised.
The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Gender Moliehi Moejane noted that they are currently in a preparation process, where they are working hard to ensure that those facilities are fully operational by December.
In addition, the Ministry of Gender’s Director of Planning Pheko Mashoai said the construction of those facilities will be complete within this financial year, also promising such would be functional after compeletion.
Addressing the issue of Ha Pokolane High Altitude Sport facility, Mashoai said the facility is not operational due to bad state of a 13 km road and a lack of power supply at the training centre.
Plans are to maintain the dilapidating building which, according to him, is to be followed by sourcing an independent entity that will run the facility.
