Phafane retains LEFA presidency

Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) incumbent President Advocate Salemane Phafane (KC) was  re-elected for his fifth term as president on Saturday. .

Phafane walloped his opponent Maseru District Football Association President Lijane Nthunya, the second challenger since he became President in 2006. Lioli Football President Lebohang Thotanyane was his first challenger in 2013.

He accumulated 42 votes while Nthunya received 7 votes.

Two associations within LeFA were denied admission into the congress, Coaches Association of Lesotho and Lesotho University and Colleges Sports Association (LUCSA).

Coaches Association submitted 4 different names of delegates instead of two because of the ongoing disagreements in their association.

LUCSA President Ts’epang Mantutle confirmed on Thursday that LUCSA missed the submission deadline and that was why they could not participate in the congress.

Addressing the congress, Phafane hailed his organisation for achieving significant FIFA projects and others.

He said LeFA is in good books with Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Council of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA).

Phafane  said all LeFA structures to be vigilant not allow external forces to influence them.

“For that we give thanks to echo leadership of the Secretary General of LeFA Mokhosi Mohapi, his entire staff, Accounting staff and administration staff and all colleagues and friends at LeFA we thank you so very much.” he said.

Phafane directed vote of thanks to all delegates who voted for him saying without them he is nothing.

He also challenged his opponent Lijane Nthunya to join him for the betterment of football in the country.

“I tried to shake you Mr. President, but I see you are  still strong, I am so proud because what I stand for is the improvement of football in the country.”. Nthunya said in his congratulatory speech.

“I am hoping there are some things in my manifesto you can take and use for the growth and betterment of football.” he said.

The congress also adopted the Lesotho Football Association proposed M23 822 250 operational budget for 2022.
