A divided Federation of Athletics Lesotho (FAL) has finally elected an executive committee after dramatic twists and turns
The committee was elected during an Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the 20th March 2021.
The outgoing president Makhaola Serake opened the AGM by thanking all delegates to be present on this special day to elect their new executive committee. He again gave standing ovation to media present because they are here for the people. He acknowledged the presence of two mother bodies Lesotho National Olympic Committee and Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission observers and officials.
Serake told the delegates that FAL had a painful journey from September 2020 to date where some executive members resorted to civil courts for resolving their misunderstandings. He said World Athletics (WA) issued a directive to those members to withdraw case from courts and call elections before 31st March 2021.
There was much drama as the roll call was conducted by the Secretary General Makara Thibinyane. Apparently, Maseru, Berea and Leribe associations were represented by three delegates, one more than accepted by the constitution.
The AGM had to be stopped for about 20 minutes as they deliberated on reducing the number to the accepted one.
Leribe and Berea dismissed their delegates as required but it was a much tougher exercise for Maseru, but it was finally done.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), led by former prominent journalist Palo Mohlotsane assisted by officials from Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission (LSRC) and Lesotho National Olympic Commission (LNOC) spent nine hours listening to grievances and complains from the delegates.
Mohlotsane as Chairman of the IEC, conducted the painstaking voting process in a way that delegates understood the processes, allowing delegates to express their grievances before voting could be conducted.
There were numerous complaints, where Mafeteng Athletics Association alleged that Qacha’s Nek delegates were ineligible to be in the AGM because both of them do not subscribe with Qacha’s Nek Athletics, and they failed to pay membership of FAL.
Mafeteng request was dropped because there was no sufficient evidence. Mohlotsane notified delegates that as IEC, they do not have power to expel members from the AGM because they did not pay membership fee. He told them that is the duty of FAL executive committee.
Makhaola Serake and Moea Kubutu withdrew their candidature before the process of elections. Kubutu was contesting for Vice Secretary and as a Member, while Makhaola Serake was seeking re-election in the position of president.
The IEC finally allowed the process of elections after 9 hours of arguments regarding eligibility of some delegates.
Former deputy president Ts’eliso Pheta narrowly defeated Kokolia Mokonyana by 10 votes to 9 votes. In the vice president position Moboleli Ntsapi from Mokhotlong Athletics lost to Sefali Sefali of Thaba-Tseka athletics by 10 to 9 votes.
